The Battle of Hastings

hastings

Nearly eighty Year 7 students enjoyed not only learning about the Battle of Hastings for their History enquiry, but also participating in a mock battle! The new secondary curriculum emphasises cross curricular learning, for example, incorporating Art and Design, History and in this case Drama into the learning in the classroom.

Over several weeks, Year 7 developed their knowledge and understanding of the preparation and planning for the battle. For homework, the students made fantastic shields in readiness for the battle. The lesson before, the students found out if they were a Saxon or a Norman. On the day, rather excited students acted out their parts in the mock Battle of Hastings 2009.

Back in the classroom, when it came to evaluating why William won on the day, there was a forest of eager hands keen to give Mrs Fielder the various reasons for William’s success in the Battle of Hastings. Did the students enjoy their learning; the majority vote in the classroom was a resounding yes!
