A Year of Success and Achievement

This year has seen many successes for Somervale School.  We were listed by the Government in the top ten most improved schools for in the country for GCSE results including English and Maths and we have won a number of awards including one of the prestigious Teaching Awards for our work on sustainability.  Half of the students in Years 7 to 11 represent the school in at least one sport and we have won several B&NES sporting championships including Year 11 boys’ football, junior indoor athletics and girls’ badminton as well as becoming the south west regional golf champions.  Uptake for arts activities in the school is well above the national average and we are the only school in the UK – as far as we know – to have a community radio station on the site.  We were the first secondary school in the UK to be awarded the Children’s Society Charter for Children’s and Young People’s Rights.

We have been informed by Bath & North East Somerset LEA that Somervale will be one of the 11 schools rebuilt under the Governments’ Building Schools for the Future Scheme.  Whilst this is not scheduled until 2015, we are now looking to our future with excitement and resolve.

Somervale School Record of Achievement Day and Prom

Somervale’s Year 11 enjoyed a wonderful leavers’ day on June 27th, the school’s traditional Record of Achievement day.  Students arrived in a variety of modes of transport from limousines and fire engines to motor bikes and horses.  They enjoyed a breakfast together and were interviewed by visiting VIPs who were very impress with their plans and ambitions.  The day ended with the showing of a DVD of the arrival procession and the presentation of awards and the distribution of the year book.

The students later turned out in style once again to enjoy their Prom which was held at the Centurion Hotel in Midsomer Norton.
