Somervale Golfers are South West Champions

Somervale’s talented golfers have become the regional champions in the South West 2008 schools games competition.

Having progressed comfortably from the area heat, the team set off to compete in a stableford match at the beautiful Kendleshire golf course in Bristol.  Prizes were on offer for the winning teams and fort individuals.

“The Somervale team played very solid golf, building up points throughout the competition,” said team captain Will Hobbs.  “All team members scored consistently well – a great team effort” he added.

Year 9 student Jessie Cook scored enough points to scoop second prize in the individual awards. The other team members – all aged 13-16 – were Michaela Chivers, Daniel Cox, Ben Bicknell, and Alex Todd.

The team finished on 120 points which was enough to crown them Regional Champions of the Inaugural 2008 schools games.

“I am very proud indeed of these students – their team spirit was second to none,” said PE teacher Jeff Dent.  “This adds yet another trophy to Somervale School’s sporting awards cabinet this year.”

Well done to all involved!

Ten Tors Challenge 2008

In early January we selected 7 Year 10 students who expressed an interest in competing in the Ten Tors Challenge 2008 on Dartmoor. Training started in earnest towards the end of January where they put their navigation skills to the test. This involved the Mendips, the Black Mountains, the Quantocks and Dartmoor itself.

During these training weekends, the group were continually observed from a distance to check their competence in navigation and fitness levels. All training sessions were completed as part of a consortium with Marlwood, Matravers, Sexeys and Norton Hill School.

Within this consortium, Somervale were proving to be an excellent team. Each training weekend, the team were beating previous set times! We had high hopes.

After the final training on Dartmoor, our team managers; Sam Lynn and Tony Rogerson had a hard decision to make; who was going to be the final 6! With a team finally selected, we then had a new barrier: injuries and fitness. This then unfortunately left us with a team of 4. However, with two new members from Norton Hill, we were still able to complete.

During the weekend of the 9th May 2008, 400 teams descended on Dartmoor for the final and ultimate challenge. The Somervale team were completing in the 35 mile category. In the heat, Somervale achieved the ‘Ten Tors Challenge’ in 34hours!

At the end of this fantastic experience, the group were exhausted, but elated. Many have now gone onto participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award and can’t wait until challenge 2009!

The team consisted of:                                           Training team:

Adam Parfitt (team leader)                                     Kelly Davis

Marie Davis                                                               Jack Kendall

Becky Evans                                                             Connor Evans

Somervale Cluster Hockey Festival

On Thursday 22nd May 2008, Somervale School hosted a Hockey Festival.  24 primary school students came from Welton and Paulton Junior School to take part in the event.

There were four teams who were competing in a round robin tournament, two from each school, which resulted in them even having to play a side from their own school.   Each team played three 14 minute matches with a Somervale Junior Sports Leader volunteers umpiring each game.

The idea of the festival is enjoyment, fun and participation, After almost three quarters of an hour of playing there were a few tired players, and a lot of fun was had by all who took part and observed!  There were overall winners though, and despite first and second place being tied and third and fourth, the results had to be taken on goal difference.  With one goal in it between the first and second place the results were as follows:

Welton 2 came 1st

Welton 1 came 2nd

Paulton 1 came 3rd

Paulton 2 came 4th
